|Great Falls to Helena to Townsend to White Sulphur Springs to Great Falls|
|Time and Distance: Figure five hours and 265 miles.|
|This may not look like a very remarkable drive, but half an hour
out of Great Falls you transit the Missouri River Canyon, a scenic
wonderland that changes with the seasons. Just after the
Missouri veers over the horizon you spend ten miles in
Canyon, voted one of the top ten best highways in the country by
Car and Driver Magazine. The high ranch land at Sieben
hasn't changed since it was first fenced a hundred fifty years ago.
This trip will captivate you. Stop in Helena if you need to, or continue south on US 12 to Townsend, with spectacular views of Canyon Ferry Lake, then over the mountains to the high sagebrush valley south of White Sulfur Springs. There's a little restaurant on the north end of town that serves GREAT soups (It's called either Cafe or Truck Stop). Half an hour later you're in the Little Belt Mountains crossing the highest pass in Montana. Then down the Belt Creek Drainage through the mining town of Neihart. Watch for deer, they outnumber grasshoppers.
